1. Project description

This project is conducted in collaboration with the Orang Rimba, an indigenous community residing in the forest area of Bukit Duabelas National Park, Jambi Province, Indonesia. The Orang Rimba possess a profound cultural heritage steeped in their knowledge of forest conservation. Nevertheless, this invaluable knowledge is solely transmitted through oral tradition, rendering it susceptible to erosion over time. Within this endeavor, the indigenous Orang Rimba youth, also known as cadres, will play a central role in documenting and disseminating local knowledge-based forest conservation obtained from their esteemed elders, alongside addressing the impacts of environmental changes on the community. This project will nurture intergenerational relationships and serves as a valuable learning process for both the young and older generations. The cadres will actively collaborate in developing learning modules written in two languages, namely Indonesian and the local language, referred to as Rimba language. These learning modules will be integrated into Sokola Rimba, our existing education program, jointly managed by Sokola Institute and the community\\\\\\\'s cadres. The overarching objective of this project is to fortify the Orang Rimba\\\\\\\'s local knowledge-based forest conservation through the active engagement and participation of the Orang Rimba youth groups.

2. Project progress up to now

Virtual coordination meetings with the indigenous Orang Rimba youth were convened to prepare the technical activities of the project, held in June. In these regular virtual gatherings, attended by 8 youths, we collaboratively devised the concept for the learning modules to be created, and also conducted online workshops to enhance the cadre\\\\\\\'s expertise in interviewing and data collection techniques. In July, Orang Rimba community is engaged in a customary practice known as \"melangun\" (changing residence after losing a relative), prompting the youth group to divide into two teams for conducting interviews with seven elders (four men and three women) at two different locations on July 16-18, 2023. These interviews were aimed at documenting the Orang Rimba\\\\\\\'s local knowledge pertaining to forest conservation, which will eventually be used as material for the learning module. Currently, the indigenous Orang Rimba youth are transcribing the data from the interviews they conducted with the elders.

3. Project plan forward

Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) will be organized to engage with the community and delve deeper into the Orang Rimba\\\\\\\'s local knowledge regarding forest conservation, as well as to discuss environmental issues with the elders. Subsequently, the Orang Rimba indigenous youth group will conduct a workshop to formulate and compile their findings into a bilingual learning module (Indonesian and Rimba language). Following the completion of the draft, we will convene another meeting with the community, particularly the elders, to review the module. Once the learning module about Orang Rimba local knowledge-based forest conservation is finalized, it will be distributed and utilized as educational material at Sokola Rimba (The Jungle School). Currently, Sokola Rimba reaches over 60 Orang Rimba children (both boys and girls) residing within the national park area.
