1. Project description

250 children from 10 communities in Kampala  are learning about the value of the natural environment, the problems of global warming and climate change to increase their knowledge and champion them to become environmental activists. Climate change in Africa  and the whole world will continue to increase the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events such as heat waves, droughts, floods and landslides. Trees are cut without replanting, litter is dumped with minimal garbage collection services, yet most children are not well educated in the importance of environmental protection, and so continue the patterns of their parents.  The children are helped by a mentor , who is well known to them  at community level.  They have learnt  the importance of conserving the environment, and are finding local low-cost solutions that will help to restore the environment. They are involved in child led advocacy and  particularly around tree planting. Children are being  taught their right to a clean environment, and how to engage in decision-making within the family and community.

2. Project progress up to now

1. Describe the details of project including the preparation process so far.

  • 10 trainees who are called mentors (6M, 9F)  in 10 locations in Kampala District, are implementing the project through child ambassador clubs. Empowering and encouraging children to be environmental change agents. This activity was conducted on 31st may 2023 at Namirembe Resource centre.  Topics of training were; ability to differentiate between weather, climate and global warming, to uunderstand what brings about climate change, Recognize the effects of climate change, Track the carbon footprint of our actions, counteracting the effects  climate change by planting more trees for every tree cut down.

  • They flagged off to incorporate the lessons in their clubs at community level. Each club received resources to use during the club meetings. These included stationery, seedlings and watering cans to use during the tree nursery bed set up.

2.  Training of Child Ambassadors in understanding global climate crisis and the importance of local initiatives like tree planting.

  • In the months of June /July 2023, 250 children were explained to what climate change means and the effects it causes to our environment and the entire planet. The children are now able to explain what causes climate change and have jointly created clubs to enable them generate activities that mitigate the effects of climate change. They have appreciated the need to grow more trees, protect the existing trees as well as to conserve nature for healthy living on earth and in water.
  • The 10 mentors together with CRANE staff taught and continue teaching children about environmental conservation, particularly how to plant and nurture trees.  The children were taught how raise tree seedlings using mangoes and avocado seeds, they learnt how to propagate tree seeds and manage the seedlings during the germination process. Emphasis was put on the role trees play in release of oxygen during photosynthesis, a process that helps to reduce on the existing greenhouse gas in the atmosphere.
  • This exercise enabled them to understand the requirements and conditions necessary for seed germination.
  • The trees will then be planted in their communities for the children to be able to monitor the progress while providing the required nurture. The children are taught at partner level during the special meeting days to participate in the environmental club activities.
  • The children have dealt specifically with mangoes and avocado seedlings since these fruit trees contribute to reduction of greenhouse gasses, mitigate effects of global warming as well as enhancing the dietary diversity as an indirect benefit of the project in the long run.
  • The 250 children have constituted the greening Kampala Ambassadors clubs as they create green and clean spaces, they have all acquired knowledge and skills in raising, managing seedlings and planting trees through the trainings and demonstrations conducted in their respective environmental clubs. The mentors were trained on how to teach, and guide the children.
  • The children have increased knowledge about global warming and climate change. They are learning to create and maintain clean, green spaces through the environment club teachings. These clubs are set up and run by the children with the support of the mentors. The children have started creating local solutions to climate change and creating educational materials like spoken word and songs which will be used to make videos that will be used for advocacy purposes. Under the guidance of mentors, the children are taking lead in composing songs, writing poems on environmental conservation. They are also encouraging adults like their parents through sharing messages and pledges that reduce the effects of climate change and global warming.

 3. Progressive achievements of the project

  •  10 environmental clubs  created, Children are aware of the leading causes of global warming and the main sources of Carbon dioxide in our environmental activities, how it affects the survival of plants and animals on the living planet

  • 250 children trained  and empowered with knowledge and skills in making seedlings and  tree planting

  • 10  mentors have been trained to support in creating strong information led environmental child ambassadors clubs.

  • Children rights and responsibilities towards creating a clean and greener environment are taught during the club meetings.

  • 250 children are being empowered to  become environmental ambassadors change agents.

  • Children are now able to list the causes and activities that can lead to climate change and global warming.

  • Children in their different communities through their clubs are actively championing clean-up to ensure healthier environments.

3. Project plan forward

Planned & Ongoing Activities

  • Ongoing climate change and Global warming lessons and undertakings at children club level

  • Children are managing their tree nurseries, through regular watering of their seeds to sprout.
