HAWA BADLAU

1. Project description
Problems to be solved, Project purpose, and Activities you plan to do.

Nepal faces a complex air pollution issue with diverse origins. Kathmandu, its capital, has seen a notable deterioration in air quality. This decline is attributed to a range of factors, including industrial emissions, vehicle fumes, open burning of waste and agricultural remnants, and the reliance on traditional cooking and heating techniques. The consequences of air pollution in Nepal are dire and wide-ranging.

Firstly, it poses a significant threat to public health. Inhalation of polluted air containing fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and other toxic pollutants has been linked to various respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, including asthma, bronchitis, and lung cancer. Vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions are particularly susceptible to the adverse effects of air pollution.

\"HAWA BADLAU\" will delve into the various aspects of air pollution in Kathmandu, exploring its causes, impacts, and potential solutions. By examining the local context, we aim to shed light on the unique challenges faced by Nepal in combating air pollution and identify opportunities for sustainable development and clean air initiatives. Campaign also raise the awareness as marked on the 16th Plan of the Government of Nepal article 4 (11) on Development of environment and natural resources, disaster management and sustainable development.

The youth, being the future of our nation, play a crucial role in addressing this issue and advocating for cleaner and healthier air through the \"HAWA BADLAU\" campaign. Ultimately, the goal of the digital awareness campaign is to catalyze a shift in public attitudes and behaviors towards air pollution, fostering a culture of environmental stewardship and collective action and also consist the implementation of Constitution of Nepal 2015, Article, 30 i.e. Every individual has rights to live in clean and healthier environment.

With the utmost utilization of the digital platforms which has wide reach and accessibility, this campaign is an effective way to disseminate information to a larger audience, including the youth population who are often surfing online.

Furthermore, social media enables interactive and engaging campaigns, encouraging active participation, and fostering a sense of community around environmental issues. Overall, digital platforms and social media are powerful tools for raising awareness, mobilizing action, and driving positive change to combat air pollution.

2. Project progress up to now

Describe the details you did related your project including the preparation process so far.

Under the Hawa Badlau Campaign, Kayapalat launched its activities in June 2024. Despite the challenges posed by the lengthy process required to secure approval from the Social Welfare Council for fund disbursement, we remained focused and proactive. This period, though marked by administrative delays, was utilized effectively to lay the groundwork for our campaign.

During this time, our team concentrated on developing the conceptual framework for the Hawa Badlau video, which is intended to serve as a key educational tool in raising awareness about air pollution. We also designed and produced flyers and managed our social media channels to ensure consistent and engaging communication with our audience. The social media management efforts included planning the rollout of quizzes, informative posters, and other interactive content aimed at educating the public on the causes and health effects of air pollution.

In addition, we initiated the groundwork for the Survey and Data Collection on Air Pollution in Kathmandu. This critical component of the campaign is set to take place from 1st August 2024 to 15th August 2024. The survey aims to gather comprehensive data on the levels and impacts of air pollution in the region. Once the data is collected and analyzed, we will compile the findings into a research report that will be shared with relevant stakeholders. This report will not only highlight the current state of air pollution but also serve as a basis for advocacy and further action.

Looking ahead, the Orientation Workshop has been meticulously planned and is scheduled for 10th August 2024. The application process for this workshop is already underway, with a Google Form available for interested participants. Selection will be based on merit, ensuring that the 20 individuals chosen will be those who can most effectively contribute to the campaign’s goals. The workshop aims to empower these participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to drive the Hawa Badlau Campaign forward and make a meaningful impact in their communities.
